United Nations Day 2013

IMG_0495UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. 24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948.

To mark this year’s United Nations Day, UNIC Canberra, with the support of the ACT Government, held a flag raising ceremony in Canberra’s Albert Hall. Continue reading

Syrian Crisis: United Nations Response – Update No.13

On 11 October, the Security Council formally approved the setting up of an unprecedented OPCW-UN Joint Mission to eliminate the chemical weapons programme of the Syrian Arab Republic proposed by the Secretary-General and to deploy up to 100 personnel from both organizations to implement Security Council resolution 2118 (2013). New tsunami forecasting products will be available for the Pacific Ocean in 2014

NOAA WC/ATWCThe tsunami travel time map generated by the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Centre shows the initial estimate of travel time across the ocean.The enhanced tsunami products, under development since 2011, include tsunami wave forecasts that will help countries improve their response capability. The enhancements are expected to reduce significantly the number of areas warned unnecessarily and to help provide advanced notice of potential local tsunamis.
