Reuters to Uplift Journalists in Papua New Guinea

Port Moresby, Wednesday 26th Augustt 2016

The United Nations and the Media Council of Papua New Guinea are delighted to announce that a special media training course is taking place in Port Moresby beginning on the 29th August. This training is being conducted by the world’s top journalist organization, Thomson Reuters. The week-long training will accommodate 15 highly-committed and motivated journalists in the country, from a range of media outlets. This first-ever initiative in Papua New Guinea aims to further develop skills and capacities of local journalists. Through hands-on sessions, participants will focus on pressing development issues in the country, such as children rights, reproductive health, gender equality, environment, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The training shall equip participants with fact finding and analytical skills for reporting to international standards.

Two trainers from Reuters will deliver a tailor-made course which best matches the level of local reporting and thematic issues. The lead trainer has 35 years of experience as a reporter, editor and broadcaster in Canada, the UK, France and Australia for among others, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Radio France International, and The Sydney Morning Herald. He has conducted training courses in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, South Africa, East Timor, Thailand and Sweden.

“It is absolutely a thrilling opportunity for local journalists to be trained by specialists. I am confident this training will be a life-changing session for the selected journalists and I encourage all of them to make the most of it. The UN always considers media reporters as an essential catalyst for development. They have the power to inform, influence and motivate people across the country. That is why we have organised this training,” says Roy Trivedy, the UN Resident Coordinator in Papua New Guinea.
