On the occasion of this year’s World Tourism Day celebrations, UNWTO is organizing its first ever WTD Essay Competition, while the 2013 World Tourism Day photo & twitter competition will be launched shortly. Celebrated globally on 27 September, the day represents a unique opportunity to raise awareness of tourism’s role in water access and shine a spotlight on the sector’s contribution to a more sustainable water future.
In line with the 2013 United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation, the 2013 theme for World Tourism Day is Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future.
Considering water as both a tourism resource and an asset, the essay should stress the importance of water planning and sustainable management as a powerful instrument for tourism development and green growth in the tourism sector. Furthermore, the essay should target a wide audience and is expected to be easy and engaging to read. At the same time, its findings have to be based on verifiable quality research, data, solid arguments and factual content, in order to meet general quality standards and UNWTO criteria.
Contributors are encouraged to provide aspects and perspectives which enrich the following set of suggested topics:
- Main challenges of water usage in the tourism sector
- Water (mainly wetlands, including coastal areas) as a destination’s natural asset in its various dimensions
- Linkages between tourism, water and the green Economy
