Media briefings on Small Island Developing States and Climate Change

briefingUNIC Canberra held media briefings in Australia and New Zealand to inform journalists and other interested parties about two upcoming UN conferences. The Third International UN Conference on Small Island Developing States SIDS) is being held in Samoa from the 28 August – 4 September and the UN Climate Summit in New York on the 23 September.

Senior UN officials from New York Headquarters briefed the audiences of media, NGO, academic and government representatives via video link in Wellington on the 13th of August and Sydney on the 20th of August.

Mr Nikhil Seth and Mr Nikhil Chandarvarkar from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ Division for Sustainable Development briefed the Wellington and Sydney events respectively on the SIDS Conference.

It was followed by a briefing on the UN Climate Summit 2014 by Mr Dan Shepard, the focal point for sustainability at the UN Department of Public Information.

In Wellington, Professor Ralph Sims, a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report and Professor of Sustainable Energy and Director of the Centre for Energy Research at the Massey University also spoke at the briefing on the current climate situation.

The presenters also answered questions from the audience on the UN events.
