Learning about career opportunities at the UN

webOn the 9 October, UNIC Canberra spoke to university students at the Australian National University about career opportunities at the United Nations at their International Organisations Day.

Keynote speaker, Peter Van Laere, from the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific travelled from Bangkok to explain the evolving nature of the development sector and the Organisation’s recruitment processes to Australian students.

Offering tips to the students, he highlighted “sustainable” as a current buzzword of the sector, encouraging them to consider using it when applying for jobs.

UNIC Canberra staff members held an information stall at the event where they provided information about the Secretariat, specialised agencies, programmes and funds.

About 200 students from disciplines ranging from non-communicable diseases to engineering and economics discussed their career goals and interests with UNIC Canberra staff who explained recruitment processes and job search websites.

Other International Organisations that participated included UNHCR, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Australian Red Cross, CARE Australia, Australian Volunteers for International Development, Teach for Australia and Engineers without Borders.
