UN Hails Upcoming Development Forum in Jiwaka

Over the course of last 3 years, with the support of European Union and United Nations Development Programme, Department of National Planning and Monitoring, communities in Jiwaka were able to team up and build a first cassava-feed plant and mini-poultry processing plant. This has opened up various income generating activities as well as wider economic and employment opportunities for the community. Following these developments, communities have also seen better access to education, increased cooperation with neighboring communities and female empowerment.

In recognition of this success, the community received additional funds from the Jiwaka Provincial Government, Governor William Tongamp, Open Member and other partners, as well as Prime Minister’s Excellence award last year.

“Communities in Jiwaka represent an example of community spirit and a power that drives change. The upcoming Development Forum is a great initiative to showcase the success that have been achieved by Jiwaka community and identify further opportunities. We also hope that it will inspire communities across Papua New Guinea to make their own positive changes”, said Roy Trivedy, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative.
