International Migrants Day Film Screening and Panel Discussion

It was no surprise that the first question put to the panel was to ask how the family members had progressed. As the Director, Belinda Mason, said, it was those stories that were so effective in conveying the message of the film – both the hope illustrated by the success of two of the children, balanced by the need for greater understanding and support, as shown by the ongoing struggles of the eldest, who had been most impacted by the traumas of war, to find a place in his new home.

While the panel empathized with Constance’s struggles, Katrina Burgess, from the Migrant Refugee Settlement Services, talked about how migrants and refugees are assisted in the local Canberra community, while her colleague, Niran Karaeni, himself a migrant spoke of his own positive experience of community support.
