“We need to tax pollution, not people”, and “end subsidies for fossil fuels,” Secretary-General António Guterres told the World Summit of the R20 Coalition on Tuesday, a UN-supported environmental organization, founded by former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The idea that subsidizing fossil fuels is a way to improve people’s lives could not be more wrong, said the UN chief in the Austrian capital, Vienna, because it means spending taxpayers’ money to “boost hurricanes, to spread droughts, to melt glaciers, to bleach corals: to destroy the world.” More
Climate Without Borders Launched in Brussels
An international group of weather presenters on Tuesday officially launched the organization Climate Without Borders in Brussels, designed to connect, equip and empower other weather presenters around the world to accurately report and inform audiences about climate science and climate action.
The new group is supported by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the World Meteorological Organization and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. More

UNIC Canberra held media briefings in Australia and New Zealand to inform journalists and other interested parties about two upcoming UN conferences. The Third International UN Conference on Small Island Developing States SIDS) is being held in Samoa from the 28 August – 4 September and the UN Climate Summit in New York on the 23 September.
The World Meteorological Organisation is holding a photo competition for the 2015 WMO calendar and 2015 World Meteorological Day.
The theme is Climate Knowledge for Climate Action. Winning entries will feature in the WMO calendar and be showcased on WMO’s website and Flickr gallery, and be displayed at 2015 World Meteorological Day celebrations. There is no cash prize. Continue reading
