Asia-Pacific region achieves Millennium Development Goal to reduce hunger by half by 2015

The Asia-Pacific region has achieved the Millennium Development Goal (MDG-1c) by reducing the proportion of people suffering from hunger by half by 2015, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced. “This is an historic achievement, a great milestone of which the Asia-Pacific region should be proud,” said Hiroyuki Konuma, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative. “Looking at the region as a whole, in the MDG base year of 1990, around 24 percent of the population was undernourished. Today, that percentage has been cut in half to 12 percent and thus has met the MDG hunger goal.” Continue reading

Asia-Pacific to pursue action-oriented financing strategy to transform development

Asia-Pacific policymakers, together with business and civil society representatives from around 40 countries in the region, agreed to a landmark financing strategy to harness the region’s immense financial resources for inclusive and sustainable growth.
Endorsed at a high-level consultation organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, the regional action plan on financing for development outlines ways to mobilize new and additional financial resources to transform the regional development landscape. Civil society to be involved in implementing SDGs in Fiji

Civil society organizations, key government stakeholders and technical experts, participated today in discussions on the post-2015 development agenda and the role civil society plays in meeting the objectives of this new development agenda. Guided by lessons learned from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) process, a draft set of 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) have been proposed as part of the post-2015 development agenda which will be approved at a special summit in the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York in September 2015.  Continue reading
